Veronica Kohler Alt

Veronica Kohler Alt — one of Bob Kohler’s nieces — reflects on the moment she realized just how deeply her uncle shaped the modern gay liberation movement. Like many family members of activists, Veronica grew up knowing Bob as the warm, funny relative at family gatherings but had no idea of the scale of his impact on LGBTQ rights, racial justice, anti–police brutality organizing, and community care in New York City.

Her story is a powerful reminder of how many profound contributions go unrecognized, even by those closest to the people who made them.

Jennifer Flynn Walker

Jennifer Flynn Walker — founder of the NYC AIDS Housing Network — recalls Bob Kohler’s extraordinary commitment as a volunteer with DASIS Human Rights Watch in the early 2000s. At a time when homeless people living with AIDS were routinely denied the emergency housing legally required by New York City, Bob stood outside the DASIS office for hours every day, tracking each case, documenting abuses, and ensuring that no one was turned away. Jennifer’s memories reveal the depth of Bob’s compassion, persistence, and moral clarity — qualities that made him a force in LGBTQ, housing, and anti–police brutality activism for decades.
